Dr. Jon Jones was hired in December 2010 by Barack Obama as the head of U.S. Department of Education. On January 28th 2002 George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act.
Sparta High School will be the only school in Wisconsin to enforce this act. Although schools in California, Michigan, Rhode Island, North Carolina, and Florida will also be enforcing this.
The actions of this are going to be brought to Sparta High School starting February 1st 2011 to improve ACT and WKCE test scores and lessen our fail rate. Reading, Science, and Mathematics will be the main focus. All teachers contracts will end June 30th and will be replaced with U.S. government certified teachers.
School will also be extended to July 1st. If progress is scene in the students there will be summer break and return on September 1st. However if there is not progress there will be a ten day break and school will resume July 11th. School hours will run from 7:45 am to 5:00pm. Another shocking discovery was that there will be an infirmary set up in the school so sick students can still come and get their work done. There will be no tardies and no absents. Obviously with a longer school day there will be longer classes and potentially more classes.
Everything for the students will be paid for by the government. That includes lunch and the two snacks of the day, in the morning and evening. There will be no open campus, everyone will be required to eat at the school and will be dismissed to lunch by class.
After school activities will also be suspended starting February 1st. This includes the music and theater department, athletics and work permits. No student will be aloud to work. If the employer is caught hiring a student they will be heavily fined by the five school police officers hired by the government. (They have no relations to Sparta.) This goes for parents too, if they don't cooperate with the attendance rules of the school they will also be fined. If improvements are made After school activities will be considered but with strict guidelines.
Grad Groups will be continued, there will be no study hall, and Advanced Placement classes will be increased. There will be unit exams as the head of the department pleases to give out. There will also no longer be computers. The school is converting back to old school teaching and technology is out. At the end of June all Juniors and Seniors will be required to take the ACT test. By enforcing all of this we are hoping to improve scores for ALL students by 25%.
