Dr. Jon Jones, from the U.S. Department of Education visited Sparta High this week and made an announcement about Sparta High Schools unilateral change. On December 10, 2010 President Barack Obama signed for this and Sparta High is one of the multiple schools being effected by this. There are also schools in California, Michigan, Rhode Island, North Carolina, and Florida. But Sparta is the only city in Wisconsin being effected. "The purpose of this is to improve our ACT scores that have been stagnant for the passed three year," said Jones.
In effect starting February 11, 2011 Sparta High administrators will be replaced with teachers chosen by the United States Government. All faculty and teachers assistants will be replaced. "On February 1, the present teachers should no longer report to Sparta High School. Their pay will continue on throughout their singed contract, but on January 30 the current faculty will no longer be employed by the Sparta School District," said Jones.
With all of these academic changes, there will also come many co-curricular changes. All co-curricular activities will be suspended and all work permits will also be suspended. "Education is our main focus, we aren't worried about all the other co-curricular's," said Jones. The school day will still begin promptly at 7:45a.m. and will be extended to 5:00p.m. The final day of school will also be extended to July 1, 2011. If there is progress at every grade level, school will resume September 1. If there isn't much progress, there will be a 10 day vacation period and school will resume on July 11.
There will be five additional police officers assigned to Sparta High. Police officers will be going after non-compliant parents and employers that still have high school students working for them. "Employers will be fined heavily if they continue to employ students," said Dr. Jones.
This is a huge change for Sparta High School and all Sparta High students. These changes will be completely funded by the government and there will be no additional cost to students or the tax payers of Sparta.
