2010 Wrestling Season

By: Morgan Leis

The Sparta Wrestling season has begun for the 2010 - 2011 school year. The team is looking to capitalize on their perfect season last year.

Sparta has created many goals for the 2010- 2011 season. They hope to add to last years's successful season when the Spartans fell just short of team state. "Getting to team state this year is our most important goal," said Junior Bryce Nowaczyk. Nowaczyk is currently wrestling at 112 pounds.

The Spartans are not only looking at team state, but they are also hoping to send more kids to the Division Two Individual State Tournament. Last year four wrestlers from Sparta qualified for state and Matt Tourdot, one of the four, was Sparta's first time ever state champion in division two.

"We have the potential to send seven kids to the state tournament this year. It's going to take a lot of hard work and believing in themselves but it can be done," said Jacob Larson, the head coach of the Sparta wrestling team.

Winning conference is another goal for the Spartans this year. Not only did the Spartans beat Tomah, but they snapped Tomah's five year streak of winning the Mississippi Valley Conference and claimed it for themselves. "A conference championship is always a goal for our team," states Buck Engel, the assistant coach of the Spartans.

The wrestling team has set big goals for the season, and with the great support of the community they can look forward to an exciting season.
